Mary Haizlip waves from her American Eagle plane. She is about to take off as a participant in the 1929 First Women's Air Derby from California to Ohio. It lasted from August 18 to August 26. The pioneer aviatrix was the second woman to receive her commercial pilot's license and was the first female pilot to be inducted into the Oklahoma Aviation and Space Hall of Fame on December 17, 1982.

The first Women's Air Derby, also called the Powder Puff Derby, took place between August 18 and August 27, 1929. The flight began in Santa Monica, California and ended in Cleveland, Ohio with some stops for rest and refueling in between.
