Ruth Nichols Early Portrait
Subject
The topic of the resource
Women air pilots -- United States
Description
An account of the resource
Possibly from her teen years or early twenties, this portrait of the soon-to-be famed aviatrix shows a pretty Ruth Nichols wearing a thin, white necklace and staring off to the right. On the back of the photograph is a list of self-criticism, such as “cheeks not high enough” and “nose too long.” This low self esteem followed her despite her long list of successes. In 1960, Nichols sadly committed suicide.

The Ruth Nichols Collection relates to early aviator Ruth Rowland Nichols, a charter member of the Ninety-Nines Organization of Women Pilots. Nichols, born into a prominent family in New York in 1901, was nicknamed "The Flying Debutante" due to her socialite status. Nichols broke many distance and speed records throughout her multi-decade aviation career, founded an aerial nursing organization called Relief Wings during World War II, and became a public speaker and author later in life.
